Long Beach is expanding vaccine eligibility to all residents SIXTEEN and older today.

The city reports more than 43 percent of eligible residents - and 86% of seniors - have already gotten at least one dose.

"We're really outpacing where the country and the state has been on these numbers," says Mayor Robert Garcia. "Because of our progress we feel comfortable and confident that we can begin now vaccinating the general population."

The state and LA County are waiting until April 15 to expand eligibility to anyone 16 and older.

The state's MyTurn website does not allow people 16 to 49 to make appointments right now, unless they're in one of the currently eligible groups.

So until next Thursday, Long Beach will be offering shots to residents 16 and older without appointments at the Convention Center, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., on a walk-up basis only, subject to availability.

If doses run out, Garcia says people who are still in line will be rescheduled for the next day or the following one.
