Leonard Nimoy's son Adam talks relationship with dad, being a Trekkie from the beginning

In 2024, Adam Nimoy, director and son of “Star Trek” actor Leonard Nimoy, released a book entitled “The Most Human: Reconciling with My Father, Leonard Nimoy."

The book chronicles Nimoy’s relationship with his father, which came with its challenges.

In an interview with KNX News 97.1 FM’s Mike Simpson, Nimoy said his famous father was a “tough nut to crack.”

“I really had trouble getting to know him,” he explained. “He was not a real warm and fuzzy person when I was a young kid. I mean, you have to understand my dad came from a very different generation. He was raised by these Ukrainian, you know, immigrants. They consider themselves Russian, but they're from Ukraine. My grandparents were not the warm and really touchy type either.”

He said his father would take him on father-and-son outings, but that it was “awkward” as they had trouble relating to one another

“I didn't know what really to say to him,” Nimoy said. “I had a very different upbringing.I was born in sunny Southern California. My dad was born during the Depression. It was a major generational shift.”

During the interview, Nimoy also recalled being a Trekkie from the beginning.

“That's the thing that kind of bonded me to my dad,” he said. “I was always proud of the work he was doing. I always loved watching him on TV, and when he came home with these polaroids of him and wardrobe and makeup for Spock, I was old enough to really know what I was looking at.”
