LONG BEACH, Calif. (KNX) — Long Beach has extended its contract with the Grand Prix through 2028, noting it will prioritize the 2028 Summer Olympics.

The Long Beach City Council approved the five-year extension to keep the Grand Prix in the city on Tuesday night, according to the Orange County Register. The contract was set to expire in June 2023.

“The Grand Prix always brings fond memories of fun times during the races,” Councilwoman Mary Zendejas said at the meeting, the Register reported.

The contract allows for reduced set-up and tear-down time for the 2023 races and beyond, according to a city staff report obtained by the publication.

The contract also notes the city and association will “cooperate in good faith” should there be any scheduling conflicts ahead of the Los Angeles Olympics, rescheduling races to accommodate the summer games.

If approved, the extension would also make the Grand Prix association a stakeholder in development discussions in regard to the race track, according to the Register.
