The city of Long Beach is planning to provide free carts to licensed sidewalk food vendors as a way to help them out.

The Long Beach Recovery Act will allow the city to provide 40 free carts to permitted sidewalk food vendors.  KNX News’ Nataly Tavidian spoke to Jennifer Rice Epstein, the Public Affairs Officer for the Long Beach Department of Health and Human Services, about what needs to be done before the free carts program can become a reality.

“We want to really hear from the people that are providing the carts to find out more about what the process is and how we can make the most of the money that we have so that we can give away as many carts as possible when the time comes,” she said.

This is just part of several efforts from the city to help out the street sellers.. For example, the city is covering portions of the permitting expenses in the first-year for qualified sidewalk vendors.

“We also want to make sure that all of the food that is being produced by these sidewalk vendors who sell food. We want to make sure that we're keeping diners in our city safe,” Rice Epstein said.

New rules for Long Beach sidewalk vendors were approved in January, including new permits and licenses that will cost vendors up to $730.
