A unique summer program in Long Beach is helping young people launch into high-paying STEM careers.
The Space Beach Camp is back for its second year, offering teens and young adults hands-on training in aerospace.
“Forty-five youth this summer will be paid to go out and get hands-on integrated educational experience,” Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson told KNX News’ Nataly Tavidian. “They'll be able to touch rockets, they'll be able to see different metallurgies and 3D printing and all of the technology and the STEM fields that are exciting in this new space economy, and they'll learn what steps they need to take if they want to pursue this for their own careers.”
Richardson said the program was designed to be accessible.

“It's an actual workforce development program to expose you to these opportunities and inspire you to continue to further education and to seek employment in a trade that will help you to be able to provide,” he said. “It's important to us that as we invest in bringing New industries and new economies to Long Beach, we make sure it's accessible for the residents who live here.”
There will also be industry tours, panel discussions, field trips, and one-on-one mentoring.
The camp runs from July 14 to July 25, and those who participate earn $18 an hour.
