Could you find Silver Lake on a map? How about Van Nuys? Toluca Woods? Caduhy? Walnut? Tarzana? Vermont Vista? South Hollywood?

Okay, that last one isn’t real. But there are so many distinct neighborhoods, towns, and unincorporated communities in Los Angeles County, you’d be forgiven for mixing up a few. According to Evan Lovett on “L.A. In a Minute,” there are at least 572.

Let’s start off with the standard-issue cities: there are 88 of those, from Alhambra to Whittier.

Within those cities, there are at least 234 self-designated neighborhoods, plus 29 historic districts recognized by the National Park Service and 34 city-designated Historic Preservation Overlay Zones.

Then there are the unincorporated areas of L.A. County, like Baldwin Hills and Topanga Canyon, where services are provided by the County Board of Supervisors. We’ve got somewhere around 187, depending on how you count.

Do you know what neighborhood you live in? Are you even sure what city you live in? Many Angelenos aren’t. If you want to double-check, look up your address here.
