Los Angeles County is reopening outdoor playgrounds

Los Angeles County is reopening outdoor playgrounds.

The move comes after the state reversed itself on the issue.

"Access to playgrounds is critical for especially our residents who do not have backyards or open space," LA County Supervisor Hilda Solis says.

A little more than a week ago, the county shut down playgrounds citing concerns about crowding, lack of mask use and keeping equipment clean.

Asked whether the back and forth on this issue might undermine confidence in official directives, Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer says it's hard to strike a balance between preventing the spread of the coronavirus and giving kids a chance to get some exercise.

"It's not like the risk that we have been talking about has gone away at playgrounds. So if you have decided that you need to take your children to a playground, we are going to ask that you be super careful," she says.

She says that means wearing a face covering, staying away from people you don't live with and using hand sanitizer before and after using playground equipment.

A lot of parents and some state lawmakers had been fighting the playground closures arguing access is "necessary for the mental and physical health of children."
