Widespread federal layoffs could hit California’s nearly 150,000 federal workers. A career coach has some advice about what to do if your job is on the chopping block.

Step one: Don’t panic.

“The very first thing to do is to breathe and pause and ask yourself what, who, and where?” career expert Madeline Mackey told KNX News’ Karen Adams. “What is it you want to be doing? What activities do you want to be doing in your next role? Who do you want to be working for?”

She also encouraged laid-off workers to think about whether they want to work from home or go into the office, or even if they want to move to another city, state, or country.

Mackey cautioned that you don’t need to rush out and apply for new jobs right away – take some time to process the loss and get back in the right headspace.

“Losing your job is like the third biggest thing that can happen to people,” she said. “So you do need some time to process your emotions. There may be anger, there may be depression.”
