A program designed to encourage veteran LAPD police officers not to take early retirement changed Tuesday with the city council’s unanimous vote in favor of a new law.

Current LAPD officers who are of retirement age can join what's known as the DROP program which offers additional retirement payments for staying with the department up to five extra years, which can total hundreds of thousands of dollars.

While the program has been successful in retaining officers, it comes at an enormous expense for the city of Los Angeles.

Under the new rule, officers who are taking time off work for any injury or incident that occurred unrelated to the job will no longer earning credits towards their DROP program.

KNX News’ Craig Finger spoke with Councilwoman Monica Rodriguez who said, “We want to make sure that we have common sense solutions to providing programs that are most effective in retaining the most talented officers.”

The councilwoman believes it is important to differentiate between officers injured on the job and those injured off the job.

KNX News has reached out to the LAPD to find out exactly how many officers are taking part in the DROP program.
