The city of Malibu is moving to update its zoning laws to speed up the rebuilding process after the Palisades Fire.

The new rules, which go before the Malibu City Council on Tuesday night, would waive certain California Coastal Commission requirements for residents rebuilding their homes in the same spot, according to Mayor Doug Stewart.

“It's a rebuild of the same house, so we don't need to go through all the paperwork and the hoops that the Coastal Commission requirements would normally require,” Stewart told KNX News’ Nataly Tavidian.

The waiver would apply to people rebuilding a home up to 10% larger than the structure that was destroyed in the fire.

Stewart said rebuilding after the 2018 Woolsey Fire “took longer than we wanted,” and this time around, the city is aiming to take down barriers like unnecessary paperwork and get residents back in their homes as quickly as possible.

If the City Council approves the changes, the Coastal Commission will be required to finalize the fast-tracked rules by April 11.
