As summer approaches, the clock is ticking for people living in one of Southern California's highest fire risk zones to clear the brush from around their homes.
Malibu officials are warning residents that the deadline for clearing brush and providing defensible space around homes is set for June 1. After that, inspections begin, and non-compliance notices could be followed by a more than $1,000 fine.
The urgent need for brush clearance this year is directly related to the growth of brush in the last 6 months, according to Malibu Mayor Steve Uhring.
“We were blessed by a lot of rain last winter, and all that rain has turned into the brush that's nice and green, but we all know within a couple months it’s gonna turn brown and become just tinder for a fire,” he said. “You add Santa Ana winds to that, and that’s when it becomes deadly.”

Uhring says homeowners should view the process as not only protecting their homes, but their neighbors’ homes as well.
