As officers arrived to the area of the call, they spotted the suspect run into an apartment complex on Victory Boulevard near the intersection with Reseda Boulevard, police said.

An officer in a helicopter overhead reported the man appeared to fire a gun at it, then ran to an alley behind the apartment complex, according to the police statement.

The gunfire exchange with officers occurred in that alley, where the suspect was shot and declared dead at the scene, the LAPD stated. No officers were injured.

A preliminary investigation revealed there were no signs the helicopter was struck by gunfire, according to the LAPD.

A handgun was recovered from the scene and booked as evidence, according to police.
