The shooting was reported at 5:43 p.m. Monday in the stairwell outside 7116 and 7118 West Blvd., near Florence Avenue and Crenshaw Boulevard, according to a desk officer at the Los Angeles Police Department's Operations Center.

The victim and a man believed to be in his 30s "exchanged words" in the stairwell and the younger man allegedly shot the other man in the upper body and face, the officer said.

Paramedics pronounced the victim dead at the scene at 6:04 p.m.

He was later identified as Rashad Hooker, 47, according to the Los Angeles County Office of Medical Examiner.

A witness told officers she saw the suspect step over the victim and run upstairs into an apartment, the officer said. No arrests have been reported.
