A man in his 20s was found dead Tuesday at the base of a cliff in San Pedro, prompting a hoist operation to recover the body.

Firefighters responded around 2:20 p.m. to the 1000 block of West Paseo Del Mar near Sunken City, where the man's body was discovered on the rocks below the cliff, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

It was not immediately clear how the man ended up at the bottom of the cliff or whether his death was accidental.
The name of the victim was being withheld pending notification of relatives.
The circumstances surrounding the death remained under investigation.
