A man who allegedly resisted arrest and stabbed himself in Palm Desert was in the hospital Tuesday with serious self-inflicted injuries, authorities said.
Dexter McCluney was arrested Monday with Jareca McCluney on suspicion of resisting arrest, according to Lt. Christopher Ternes of the Riverside County Sheriff's Department. Jareca McCluney posted $5,000 bail and was released the same day.
Deputies responded to the 73000 block of El Paseo at 10:28 a.m. that day to check the welfare of someone who called in making irrational statements to dispatch, a sheriff's spokesperson told City News Service.
Before deputies arrived to the location, they found out that Dexter McCluney had a warrant for his arrest out of San Bernardino County, Ternes said. Deputies arrived to find the couple at the location and upset.
Jareca McCluney had a large dog on a leash and deputies attempted to give instructions to the two, but neither of them complied, according to Ternes. Dexter McCluney then allegedly reached into his backpack and got a large knife, saying that he was not going to go to jail, while Jareca McCluney refused to leave his side.
"The subject had a knife and appeared to be stabbing himself," the sheriff's department told CNS.
A crisis negotiation team and a K-9 team subsequently responded to the scene and assisted deputies.
"After hours of negotiations, Jareca and their dog were ultimately removed from the scene," Ternes said. "Less-lethal devices were deployed to gain compliance and Dexter was eventually taken into custody."
Dexter McCluney was treated on the scene by paramedics and was then taken to a hospital, according to Ternes. He is expected to be booked and charged for exhibiting a weapon at a peace officer and for his warrant.
