The victim was hit about 6:40 p.m. Sunday in the area of South Gilbert Street and West Orangethorpe Avenue.

"Fire Department personnel provided medical aid and transported him to a nearby hospital, said Fullerton Police Department spokeswoman Kristi Wells. "Sadly, his condition later declined, and he was pronounced deceased by hospital staff."

The driver of the white Toyota Prius that hit the man remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

According to Wells, the investigation revealed the Prius was southbound on Gilbert Street and making a westbound turn onto Orangethorpe Avenue and struck a pedestrian who was pushing a wheelchair north in a marked crosswalk on the west side of the street, approaching the sidewalk.

It's not clear if the man was crossing against a 'don't walk' signal.

Neither alcohol nor drugs appear to be contributing factors, Wells said.

Anyone with information about the fatality was urged to contact Fullerton Police Traffic Accident Investigator J. Munoz at 714-738-6812 or jmunoz@fullertonpd.org. Anonymous tips can be supplied through Orange County Crime Stoppers at 1 855-TIP-OCCS or occrimestoppers.org.
