A man suspected of breaking into a home in Newport Beach Thursday morning was shot and killed by someone inside.
Police responded to the area of Indus Street and Redlands Drive shortly after 4 a.m. after receiving a report of a man “suffering from mental health issues” or possibly under the influence of drugs and alcohol, according to the Newport Beach Police Department.
Authorities said that while officers were on their way to the scene, the man, who has not been identified, forced his way into a home and was shot by the home’s occupant. He died at the scene.
It was not immediately known if the home’s occupant will face any criminal charges but police said detectives are conducting an active homicide investigation.
