The Manhattan Beach city council approved new bicycle laws this week that went into effect Wednesday.
Manhattan Beach Mayor pro tem Joe Franklin told KNX News reporter Emily Valdez that the laws come in response to too many kids riding bikes, especially e-bikes, dangerously.

"We have a bike path here. It's called the Marvin Road Bike Path, and we put the speed limit at 15 MPH, and that would be for any bicycle. So it could be for e-bikes and even just pedal bicycles," Mayor Franklin said.
Other laws include:
- Anyone under 18 must wear a helmet
- All riders must have lights on at night
- All riders must use bicycle lanes
- No doubling up on bicycles
- No stunts or speeding
- All riders must stop at stop signs
The laws also prohibit e-bikes on sidewalks, walking areas, grass areas, the Civic Center, and the Strand. If you find yourself on a road without a bike lane, you must ride close to the right-side curb or edge of the roadway.
Mayor Franklin says he and police officers have been going to schools for the past year, telling kids about the rules of the road, and so now they're handing out tickets.
First-time violators will be hit with a $500 ticket, second-time offenders $750, and if you get three in one year, it's $1,000.
