OCEANSIDE, Calif. (KNX) — A 20-year-old U.S. Marine was fatally struck by a box truck Monday on Interstate 5 near Camp Pendleton while he was helping a pair of crash victims.

Around 3:30 a.m, the marine — who authorities identified as Alberto Lucio — stopped to assist 36-year-old Darryl Sheffey, who had crashed his Ford Edge while traveling southbound on the highway, according to a news release from the California Highway Patrol.

Sheffey was traveling with a 31-year-old woman who also needed aid. As Lucio was assisting the pair, an international box truck collided into him and the Ford Edge, the news release said.

The marine died at the scene from his injuries.

The crash victims were taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla with major injuries, CHP said.

Sheffey has been arrested for multiple felony charges and will be booked into the San Diego County Jail after he receives medical care but CHP declined to say what Sheffey has been charged with until after he is arraigned.
