Earlier this week, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said she hoped to have a one-on-one conversation with President Donald Trump about the National Guard troops and U.S. Marines he’s deployed to the city.
So far, no luck.
Bass told KNX News’ Craig Fiegener that Democratic officials have had longstanding problems getting anyone from the Trump administration to pick up the phone.
“In the first Trump administration, whether it was a written policy or just a verbal policy, Democrats did not get any of their calls responded to,” she said.
Bass called Trump’s immigration raids a “hardcore assault” on Los Angeles and its economy, turning immigrant-heavy business districts into a “ghost town.”
“Go into East L.A. and you will see people are not patronizing the restaurants and the other businesses because there's a sense of terrible fear in so many neighborhoods,” she said. “California, as you know, is the fourth largest economy on Earth. Los Angeles is the second largest city in the country. If you damage our economies, you are impacting the economy of the United States of America.”
On Tuesday, Bass lifted a nighttime curfew in downtown L.A. that was enacted last week in response to looting and vandalism during anti-ICE protests.
