Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has signed two executive orders aimed at speeding up the recovery from the warehouse fire in Boyle Heights.
One of the orders provides extra cash for services to help local residents and also ensures that the LAFD closely monitors the site for safety concerns over the next three months. The other order sets up a new body to oversee recovery and conduct community meetings.
Mayor Bass says it gets the City Attorney to look at possible legal action over the fire.
“Holding those responsible accountable requires a thorough investigation, and we will follow the facts, and families should not have to wait for accountability before they receive help,” she said. “As mayor, I will not accept a recovery process that restores the status quo. My responsibility is to ensure that this community is safer moving forward than it was before the fire began.”
The warehouse fire started on June 17 at the Lineage cold storage facility on South Los Palos St. and reignited once again on June 19. A knockdown was declared on June 24; however, fire officials say the fire is still smoldering deep inside the building.
A foul smell is still being reported in the area from an estimated 85 million pounds of rotting food held in the cold storage warehouse.
The cause of the fire is still being investigated. Lineage, the warehouse owner, says it believes the fire started as a subcontractor carried out tests on the solar panels on the roof.
