An investigation was underway Wednesday into the shooting death of a 29-year-old man in Mead Valley.

Jose Eduardo Del Real of Perris was gunned down shortly after 8 a.m. Monday near the intersection of Cajalco Road and Haines Street, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

Sgt. Rafael Victorio said patrol deputies were called to the location to investigate reports of a wounded man and found good Samaritans performing CPR on Del Real.

Efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful, and he was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, Victorio said.

He said further investigation revealed that Del Real "was related to a call for service" involving a car theft minutes earlier in the 19000 block of Summerwind Trail, near Dawes Street, just under a mile from where he was found shot.

The sergeant did not specify whether Del Real was a possible suspect or victim in the theft.

"No arrests have been made at this time," Victorio said.

The investigation was ongoing Wednesday. Anyone with information about the case was asked to contact detectives at 760-578-2091, or 760-393-3530.
