“I remember the day that I was told Lyle just got assaulted and got his jaw broken, and I'm thinking he's over there I'm going through this over here and at least we could protect each other maybe if we were together,” he recalled. “But we were not even allowed to be together so it was difficult.
The brothers, who were convicted in 1996 for their parents’ 1989 murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole, also talked about how their family is feeling about their resentencing hearing that’s scheduled next month.
“I think we're mostly dealing with the reactions of our family who are very anxious and the delays are very upsetting for them, particularly since we have my two aunts are elderly and not in the best of health,” Lyle said. “And so there's a lot of anxiousness in the family. Because of that, that something might happen before something, you know, good could happen.”
District Attorney Nathan Hochman postponed their resentencing hearing from January to March 20 and 21 because of the wildfires.
The brothers have been serving time at Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in Otay Mesa.
