Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said that ridership on the L.A. Metro has been increasing, but the system continues to face serious life-threatening safety problems.

“Let me say this unequivocally, Metro riders deserve to be safe on the system and we will continue to do all that we can to keep not only our riders but also our operators safe,” Bass said at Metro’s board meeting Thursday.

On Monday, a woman riding the train from North Hollywood to Union Station was stabbed to death by a man described as a transient. Bass expressed her condolences to the family and friends of the victim, Mirna Soza.

“We have to consider whether Metro can build upon its commitment to make the system safer for everyone who rides it,” Bass said.

L.A. County Supervisor Lindsay Horvath, who’s also a member of Metro’s board of directors, said many people – especially women – are too frightened to ride the Metro. She demanded “meaningful” changes to Metro’s future plans for safety and security.
