LOS ANGELES (KNX) – Public health officials reported 6,509 new COVID-19 cases in L.A. County.

Wednesday’s numbers are "one of the steepest rises we've ever seen over the course of the pandemic," Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer said.

In addition, 16 COVID deaths were reported and 162 cases of the Omicron variant, according to a press release. It was also reported that Wednesday’s positivity rate was 4.5%.

There were 770 COVID-19-positive patients in L.A. county hospitalized as of Wednesday. Of those patients, 166 were in intensive care.

“These numbers make it crystal clear that we are heading into very challenging times over the winter holidays,” Ferrer said. “If our case numbers continue to increase at a rapid pace over this next week, we could be looking at case numbers we have never seen before, well over 20,000 cases a day by the end of this year.”
