The morning commute for those going into work could remain on the smoother side for a while even after everything opens back up in California.
Georgia Tech engineering professor and transportation expert Patricia Mokhtarian says many people will keep working from home at least some of the time.
"I think we will continue to see a bit of erosion back towards pre-pandemic levels but there is no question in my mind there will still be more telecommuting after we will be back to "normal" than before. The only question is how much more," she says.
But she says it's not entirely clear what will happen in a year.
Recent data from INRIX found the number of vehicle miles traveled hit a weekly average of 95 percent of pre-pandemic levels last month in LA and Orange Counties.
Much of those miles though are being driven later in the day now so the morning commute still remains lighter than before the pandemic.
