A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Tuesday for a new warehouse in San Pedro where local agencies can store supplies for wildfire victims.
The 350,000 -square-foot disaster relief warehouse will be a centralized hub for emergency and long-term recovery supplies, from PPE to construction equipment to mobile medical aid kits.
“This really isn't about GEM today. This is about the entire SoCal fire recovery,” said Michael Capone, founder of Global Empowerment Mission. “And the goal is really for everybody in the long-term recovery to be able to utilize it for free.”
L.A. County Fire Capt. Sheila Kelleher Burko said the devastation left behind by January’s fires was beyond shocking.
“The Palisades Fire, which burned 23,713 acres, destroyed over 5,000 structures, and the Eaton Fire, at about 14,000 acres, destroyed almost 9,500 structures,” she said. “That’s insane. Those are full communities, families, and it's a lot to process.”

Officials say the wildfire recovery marks one of the largest coordinated relief efforts in Southern California history.
