The total gas tax for California will rise to 63.4 cents per gallon after this new tax, the highest in the nation.
At the pump, if the total cost to fill up your tank was about $100, then around $21 of that purchase was made in taxes. That’s what KNX News’ Craig Fiegener saw when he spoke to a driver filling up his 17-gallon SUV.
The driver said that he wasn’t worried about making the money for gas back, but ensuring that he had the right money at the right time.
He also said the lowest price of gas he’s ever paid was around $3 to $4 about 10 years ago.
The California gas taxes began in 2017, when voters passed the Road and Repair Accountability Act to raise money to improve freeways and streets.
Despite this act, another driver recently found herself with car damage due to poor road infrastructure.
“I myself recently had an issue with a pothole, and it caused damage to the body frame of the vehicle, which is now going to cost me $3000 to fix,” she said.
In situations like that, you can file a claim with the Department of Transportation in situations like this; however, the timeline is long, and reimbursement isn’t guaranteed.
