The city of Los Angeles unveiled a new center in South L.A. on Thursday that’s being hailed as a new model for interim housing.

L.A. Homeless Services Authority’s  41-room Welcome Navigation Center is by referral only, but it will be open 24/7, according to Director of Special Projects Dawan Moses.

“Really this is a ‘welcome to your next stage of healing’ center,” LAHSA CEO Dr. Va Lecia Adams Kellum said.

Adams Kellum said the center will provide everything people need to get “document-ready” to move into permanent housing, along with mental and physical health services. 25 beds at the Welcome Center will be dedicated for people who have been using Metro’s trains and buses as shelter.

“This will ensure that those we counter on Metro who are in need of a safe place to stay get the services they need,” said Metro’s Deputy CEO Sharon Gookin.

After the initial pilot program at the Welcome Navigation Center, officials will consider expanding the program to other parts of the city.
