Gov. Gavin Newsom signed an executive order Tuesday that he said would provide assistance to schools and students impacted by the Southern California wildfires, including provisions that will allow students at impacted campuses to attend schools outside their normal district.

"We are using the full force of the state government to respond to the Los Angeles firestorms and ensure recovery for the thousands of residents who have been impacted by this unimaginable loss, including school-aged children," Newsom said in a statement. "The executive order I signed today will help bring back some sense of normalcy for our youth by eliminating barriers to getting them back learning in school."

According to Newsom's office, the order will suspect state rules to allow "displaced" students to attend another school that is outside of their school district. The order will also ease the process for schools that were damaged or destroyed to hold classes in temporary facilities, while waiving penalties for high schools that fail to meet minimum school year requirements.

The order also instructs various state agencies to work with districts to develop plans for rebuilding campuses that were destroyed or damaged, according to Newsom's office.
