LOS ANGELES (KNX) — Nine campuses of the California State University System, including CSA Long Beach and CSU L.A., will start the spring 2022 semester online due to surging COVID-19 cases across the region and country.

Campuses in Sacramento, the Channel Islands, San Diego, Fresno, San Marcos, East Bay, and San Francisco will also start the semester off virtually, a spokesperson for CSU said Thursday.

CSU L.A. will conduct classes online for three weeks. Long Beach will be fully virtual for two and  half weeks, administrators said.

“The safety of our community has always been our chief concern throughout the pandemic, CSU Long Beach President Jane Close Conoley said in a statement. “Delayed in-person instruction was not what we had intended for this spring, but the rise of the Omicron variant warrants this adjustment.”

CSU Fullerton and Northridge have not released any decisions regarding in-person versus virtual instruction prior to campuses reopening post-winter holidays. Cal Poly Pomona announced Wednesday it would begin instruction in-person as planned, with all students required to be vaccinated and boosted by Feb. 28.
