A man who was punched in the face while being handcuffed by police officers in South Los Angeles is not facing any criminal charges.
In late July, Alexander Mitchell was parked on a street corner in Watts when two officers approached his car, told him to step out, and handcuffed him. Video taken by a bystander shows one of the officers punching Mithcell in the face.
“Alex keeps asking, ‘What did I do? What did I do?’ They don’t really answer that,” Mitchell’s attorney, Brad Gage, told KNX News’ Emily Valdez.
The LAPD claims Mitchell was stopped for being double-parked. After being taken to the hospital with a broken nose and other injuries, Mitchell was booked for resisting arrest. But at his court appearance on Monday, Mitchell learned that no charges had been filed.
“They still may investigate further. They still might be entitled to file charges later,” Gage said. “But double parking is such a simple case.”

Gage has filed a claim against the city on Mitchell’s behalf. The LAPD doesn’t comment on pending litigation.
