Firefighters rescued a sick mule in Trabuco Canyon on Saturday.

“Eli, a 20-year-old mule, was stuck lying down on the floor of his stall, suffering from a severe bout of colic, which the very experienced equine vet told us if he did not get up, it would be fatal,” Orange County Fire Authority Captain Sean Doran told KNX News’ Emily Valdez.

In order to get Eli back on his feet, firefighters had to rely on some heavy duty equipment, including traps to the ankle, and a pyramid-like contraption.

“Actually, part of the technology dates back when I'm told to the World Wars to actually overturn tanks back to upright,” Doran explained. “So they, this technology, which is by no means new, has been refined, if you will, to allow us to execute it in these situations as well.”

Doran said Eli is standing on his own again and doing much better.
