The driver shot the suspect about 7:45 p.m. Sunday in the 7100 block of Custer Way, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Department. The gunman, who remained on scene and called deputies, said he was dropping off a passenger when he saw the woman being assaulted and intervened, deputies said.

The woman was treated at the scene by paramedics from the Orange County Fire Authority.

A witness who lives in the area told KTLA5 the man who was attacking the woman was naked at the time. The neighbor told the station he initially saw the assailant attacking the woman, who may be homeless, and later hitting the ride-hailing driver's car.

The man who was shot was taken to an hospital where he was listed in critical but stable condition, deputies said.

Anyone with relevant information for detectives was asked to call dispatchers at 714-647-7000. Orange County Crime Stoppers will accept anonymous tips at 855-TIP-OCCS.
