Occidental College won’t divest from companies with ties to Israel after the Board of Trustees voted against it, saying it would further divide the campus.

According to the Los Angeles Times, a letter sent to students and staff from the Occidental Board of Trustees Chair Lisa H. Link acknowledged the catastrophic events of the war but said if they took a stand, it might alienate some community members.

The proposal to divest in Israel-linked companies was set forth by leaders of the Occidental chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine, the L.A. Times reported. The proposal was aimed at getting Occidental College to disclose any investments in the four companies that have given weapons or any other equipment to Israel.

The board also said the indirect investments they have that are linked to Israel make up less than 0.1% of their endowment assets. They’re managed by third parties, so they claim they can’t be split up.
