Wildlife officials are working to track down a deer in the Hollywood Hills who has a large bone stuck in her mouth.
Photos of the deer spread across the NextDoor app, according to KCAL News. A photo obtained by the outlet shows the deer – possibly a female – with a femur-like bone sticking out of her mouth.
Kim Rose, a resident in the area, told KNX News’ Emily Valdez, she saw the deer while on a hike Tuesday morning.
“It's extremely distressing,” she said. “I can't think of a better word than distressing. It's awful to see.”
Tim Daly, a spokesperson for the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, told Valdez they’re actively searching for the deer.

“Once we find it, our goal is to dart it to what we call chemically immobilized, put it to sleep for a little while, make sure it'll be safely done and humanely done. And then we're going to try and examine the deer's condition and also try and remove that bone because once again it's a mystery to us as to how it got there. In fact, our biologist on the scene says it's one of the strangest things he's seen and he's been doing this a very long time.”
As of Tuesday afternoon, officials told Valdez that they have the doe in sight, but she’s in an area with thick brush and steep terrain where it would not be safe to tranquilize her.
