LOS ANGELES (KNX) – A stretch of Sepulveda Boulevard in Rancho Park closed after an oil leak.
Firefighters responded to the 2800 block of Sepulveda Boulevard around 6 p.m. Monday for a chemical investigation, according to Captain Erik Scott with the Los Angeles Fire Department.
“When we arrived on the scene, we did, in fact, have oil coming up out of the ground and was starting to spread gravity-wise south down Sepulveda Boulevard,” he said. “It was predominantly on the east side of the street. So firefighters jumped into action.
They grabbed shovels, used nearby dirt and created a series of dams to contain that oil.”
Scott said that before the firefighter arrived, about 20 to 40 gallons had gotten into the storm drain. Firefighters were able to contain 1,000 gallons of oil.
A vacuum truck from Clean Harbors and sand from the Los Angeles Bureau of Street Services were requested to reduce environmental effects, according to Nicholas Prange of the Los Angeles Fire Department.
Following the leak, Sepulveda was shut down between Sardis and Richland avenues under the 10 Freeway underpass, KCAL reported. It’s expected to remain closed throughout the rest of the day.
There is no anticipated widespread public hazard.
No injuries were reported.
