Whale watchers off the coast were able to see a pod of orcas hanging out and hunting near Rancho Palos Verdes this week.
Captain Tyler Askari, from Harbor Breeze Cruises, said orcas are a rare sighting across the world. He was out on the water with sightseers for the Jan. 2 whale spotting.
“What we saw is something that hasn't really been seen off of Southern California. Orcas first off, and then orcas hunting down a gray whale and its child,” Askari said.
He said everybody on the boat was completely intrigued by the orcas.
“It got to that point where people started putting their cameras down and their phones down,” Askari said.
Orcas that are migrating don’t typically stick around Southern California long. However, this sighting was the seventh in the region over the last few weeks.
