Organized crime rings spur spike in catalytic converter thefts

Catalytic converter thefts have been plaguing Los Angeles, and most major cities across the country, for years. For a long time, it was thought that the thefts were simply crimes of opportunity.

But the arrests of four people in connection with the murder of soap opera star Johnny Wactor, who was shot and killed by catalytic converter thieves, highlight how gangs and organized crime rings have been largely driving the increase in thefts.

According to the Los Angeles Times, police sources said the suspects were arrested in a raid targeting members of the Florencia 13 gang who were linked to catalytic converter thefts in the region.

Retired LAPD Sergeant Cheryl Dorsey told KNX News the involvement of gangs in catalytic converter thefts is nothing new.

“I don’t think that this has changed much. I think probably the way it's being reported and received has changed,” she said. “This has been an ongoing problem, and you know, I always encourage people if you see a property type crime to not get involved.”

She warned people to “be mindful” when approaching their vehicles, especially if you drive a Ford F150, Ford Explorer, or Honda Accord, which are the most frequently targeted.
