Pacific Palisades PCH lane adjustment solves traffic bottleneck

Just in time for summer, a traffic bottleneck on the northbound Pacific Coast Highway has been temporarily fixed.

This winter, debris from a landslide about half a mile north of Sunset Blvd. shut down the northbound lane of PCH. Caltrans spokesperson Mark Bischoff told KNX News’ Pete Demetriou that clearing the debris from the road wasn’t possible because the land is too unstable.

Instead, Caltrans settled on a $3 million temporary solution: moving all the lanes to the west to create an additional northbound lane.

“All of the lanes were shifted towards the shoreline to go right to the shoulder of the southbound freeway lane, which is the end of our right of way,” Bischoff explained. “And then we just realigned and re-striped so that we can use that space to create four lanes where there was three before.”

Caltrans is hoping the adjusted lanes will stop traffic from backing up during summertime travel. The agency is also working on a permanent solution to prevent the landslide from affecting travel in the future, but that may take years to come to fruition.
