A 15-foot cinder block retaining wall collapsed Sunday night in Palmdale, flooding at least five homes.
The wall gave out around 6 p.m., one resident told KNX News’ Nataly Tavidian.

“I was sitting on the couch and I heard just a big boom,” Mike said. “So I go outside in the backyard to see what’s going on, and I look over the fence in the back, and you could just see the whole tidal wave of water coming in.”
Homes and backyards filled up with mud and debris. Another resident, Jonathan, said a neighbor’s air conditioning unit was swept away and rammed into a sliding glass door.
Maintenance crews from the city of Palmdale were working to clear roadways, parks and greenways Monday. But since the broken retaining wall is on private property, the neighbors don’t know who to go to for help.
“We can’t get answers from anybody, so we’re just trying to get in our houses and see what we can do,” Jonathan said.
For now, the residents are working together to clear out the mud from each others’ homes.
As of Monday morning, Palmdale received 3.94 inches of rain, according to the National Weather Service.
