Our KNX Hero of the Week Rene Amy is bringing hope back to the town of Altadena!
Amy has been sowing poppy seeds all over the burn areas of Altadena for his "Greater Altadena Poppy Project." He has hundreds of property owners asking him to sow seeds on their land.
“We've already exceeded now the initial promise of 100 million seeds, and now we're going for that total of 25 billion seeds,” he told Heroes host Heather Jordan.
Amy knows that many of the poppies will not make it through construction over the next few years, but landowners are requesting them anyway.
“Altadena was once covered in fields of poppies to the extent that there is a street up here called Poppyfields, and I've already poppified, I don't know, about three dozen properties on Poppyfields,” he said. “So, there will be prodigious poppy production on Poppyfields this year.”
For Amy, it's a passion project that keeps him moving forward with hope.
“I lost everything in the fire,” he said. “Everything I own burned to the ground, and having gone through this past year, it has not been in any way, shape, or form a joyride. It has been, you know, horrible and awful and a long, dragging slog. And here my thought was, ‘Hey, let's, let's give people hope. Let's give them some beauty. Let's sow all these seeds so that come March and April, there will be a beautiful super bloom of these joyful flowers all over Altadena for everyone to appreciate.’”
Stay tuned next week for part two of our discussion with Rene Amy.
