Union Station Homeless Service almost had to cancel this year’s traditional Thanksgiving event, which provides thousands of meals to people in need.
“We usually get a lot of support from certain external funders and people that help us with a lot of the food and in-kind needs, and this year we just found ourselves with a lot less of that support,” the organization’s Mario Galiano said.
Galiano said that when they put out a call for donations, the community responded, but more is needed, especially nonperishables.
“We've seen a large increase in people giving the turkeys, but we also need a lot of the, what I term the very unsexy ingredients as well, you know, needed to make the entire meal,” he said. “So things such as cream of mushroom soup, the cranberry sauce and the canned bread rolls, pies, butter or stuffing, things of that nature.”
Union Station Homeless Service has a wishlist of what’s needed on its website.
