MORENO VALLEY (CNS) - A pedestrian was fatally struck today by a northbound Metrolink commuter train in Moreno Valley.
The fatality occurred about 3:10 p.m. in the area of Van Buren Boulevard and Interstate 215, according to Metrolink and the Riverside County Fire Department.
Multiple engine crews were sent to the location and discovered the pedestrian, whose identity was not immediately released, including gender, dead adjacent to the Perris Valley Line tracks, according to reports from the scene.
The train, carrying 27 passengers and a driver, came to a stop at the site.
``This occurred in a non-pedestrian area. There was no crossing,'' Metrolink spokesman Scott Johnson told City News Service.
He said that no one aboard the train was injured and arrangements were being made for the passengers' transportation to their destinations.
The train, No. 709, had departed the downtown Perris station minutes before and was bound for the downtown Riverside station, after which it would have proceeded on to Los Angeles.
Johnson said that the next available train traveling from Perris to Los Angeles is slated to depart at 5:30 p.m. The average load for a Friday afternoon is less 50 people.
``Most of the heavy traffic is coming from L.A. and not going the other way at this time on a Friday,'' the Metrolink spokesman said.
Sheriff's deputies and Metrolink personnel were investigating why the victim was on the tracks.
