A petition to recall Los Angeles City Councilmember Kevin de León has been approved for circulation, the office of the L.A. City Clerk announced Tuesday.

The effort to recall the councilmember is led by those dissatisfied with his handling of homelessness in the city. Specifically, organizers object to the construction of a tiny home community in the Highland Park and Eagle Rock neighborhoods of East L.A.

The Arroyo Seco Tiny Home Village, serving as transitional housing for L.A.'s homeless population, is expected to be the largest in California. It is set to be completed by the end of 2021.

"From day one, I promised my constituents that I would partner with them to tackle our district's challenges with urgency, compassion, and common sense—and that is exactly what we are doing," de León said in a statement released Tuesday. "Nothing will derail our focus on saving lives as we fulfill our commitment to lift unhoused Angelenos off the streets and into housing as quickly as possible."

De León is the third councilmember to be hit with a recall effort around efforts to deal with L.A.'s homelessness crisis. In July, similar petitions were approved for circulation against councilmembers Mike Bonin and Nithya Raman.

The petition against de León requires 20,563 signatures of qualified registered voters in Council District 14 by Dec. 14 to get on the ballot. The petition against Bonin will require at least 27.387 by Nov. 10; that against Raman will require 27,405 by Nov. 4.
