LOS ANGELES (KNX) - A small airplane crashed into a Beverly Glen hillside Saturday night, killing the pilot. Federal investigators are trying to determine the cause.

Neighbors say they didn’t hear any engine sputtering or propellers before the loud crash around 8 p.m. on Saturday night.

The plane crashed right above Jennifer and Joubin Soleimani’s home, diving into the hillside right between a water reserve tank and two houses. The family initially assumed the noise they heard was a car accident. They had no idea it was a plane until first responders arrived a few hours later.

“It could have ended up in somebody’s house, or hit that water tank, which would have basically  flooded out everybody,” Soleimani said.

The pilot — the plane’s only occupant — was found dead at the scene. He was a married father of two, according to a volunteer with a Jewish organization helping to recover the pilot’s remains.

Flight records show the plane was a rental, heading from Palm Springs to Camarillo. The National Transportation Safety Board is looking into the cause of the crash.
