Police fatally shoot man wielding metal pipe outside of Von's in Fontana

A man was shot and killed by police in San Bernardino County Tuesday after he reportedly attacked officers with a metal pole, officials announced.

According to the Fontana Police Department, the incident occurred at around 2:00 p.m. in a shopping center parking lot at the intersection of Cherry Avenue and Baseline Avenue.

“During the encounter, the suspect attacked the officer with the pipe, resulting in a lethal force response from the officer,” Fontana PD said in a statement.

Both the suspect and an officer were hospitalized following the incident, where the suspect succumbed to his injuries. The officer's condition was not immediately known.

San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department will handle the investigation into the fatal police shooting.
