Police Friday shot a man reported to be wielding a large shard of glass and possibly harming himself in South Los Angeles.
Officers responded about 7:15 a.m. Friday to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon in the 800 block of South Vermont Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Police Department, which was informed a man was armed with a sharp object.

According to CBS2, the man in his 30s was stabbing himself with a large piece of glass.
At least one officer opened fire, striking the man, according to the LAPD.
The Los Angeles Fire Department confirmed they transported a person from the scene to a hospital after getting a call of a person in distress with police present and a subsequent call of a shooting.
The man was listed in critical condition when taken to a hospital, police said.
It was unclear if the severity of his injuries was due to the self- inflicted stab wounds or from the gunfire.
No officers or members of the public were injured.
The area was to be closed to traffic for several hours as police continued their investigation.
