There hasn’t been a Powerball jackpot grand prize winner since May 31. The next drawing is set to happen on Wednesday, and the grand prize is currently at $815 million. If the winner takes the cash lump sum, the prize would roughly be $369 million.

KNX News’ Jon Baird spoke to people in the South Bay about the next drawing and what they would do if they were the next grand prize winner.

“I bought some yesterday actually, last night,” Alex told Baird.

Alex said if he won, he’d take the cash, take off, and live his life with his wife. He explained how he’d own a business, buy himself a house, and go to Mexico.

Another person told Baird that he doesn’t typically play the lottery, but he’d consider buying a ticket because of the grand prize. He explained how with the money, he can get his family out of debt.

Kurt Panouses, a Florida attorney who handles lottery winners, told Baird that if you do win the Powerball jackpot, you shouldn’t tell many people.

“You'll get charities reaching out. You'll get family members reaching out. You'll hear stories from, you know, people in the neighborhood. Everyone is going to talk about them. They're going to be filmed everywhere they go. They lose their privacy. They lose, essentially, their life as they know it,” he explained.

Panouses believes it’s better to take the cash lump sum instead of the annuity payout in most cases.
