The proposed California state budget would cut services for senior citizens in Los Angeles County by 12%, moving that money to more rural areas of the state.
At the Jewish Family Service L.A., they serve hot meals to seniors five days a week in a cafeteria, home-deliver meals, and provide transportation for seniors, case management counseling, and recreation. They're also teaming up with other L.A. County aging services organizations to leading with state lawmakers not to allow the money to be taken away from Los Angeles.
Lisa Shuger is a senior director for public policy at JFSLA. She told KNX News’ Emily Valdez this is “the difference between them being on the streets or being able to stay in their homes.”
“If you are 65 and older or even 75 and older, which is the more vulnerable, population of older adults, if you live on a fixed income, you don't have family around to bring over meals, you rely on these places,” she said. “Sometimes this may be your only fresh meal for the day."
